Child Benefit is a tax-free payment that you can claim for your child. It is usually paid every four weeks but in some cases can be paid weekly, and there are separate rates for each child. Child Benefits belong to everyone who works and lives in the UK, raises or takes care of a child(-ren) under 16 years old age (or under 20 if they stay in approved education or training). Children do not have to live with their parents in the UK.

You could get Housing Benefit to help you pay your rent if you’re on a low income. Housing Benefit can pay for part or all of your rent. How much you get depends on your income and circumstances. You can apply for Housing Benefit whether you’re unemployed or working.

Maternity Allowance is usually paid to you if you don’t qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay.

You could get either £136.78 a week or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is lower). It’s paid for up to 39 weeks. Payments can start 11 weeks before your baby is due. SMP is paid in the same way and at the same time as your normal wages or salary.

Universal credit is a new allowance, brought in in 2013 and combining several allowances into one. This allowance is being brought in gradually according to the districts.
